Lithuania

The Port of Klaipeda is the only port in Lithuania, thus having a great economical importance. In order to improve East-West sea trade and maintain its competitive ability with other Baltic ports, the Klaipeda port is planned to be expanded. This development will lead to pressures on environment of the natural channel connecting Curonian Lagoon and the Baltic Sea, as well as the Curonian spit coast, which is designated as a national park.

Therefore, the case study seeks to distinguish possible natural, social and economic conflicts of the establishment of Klaipeda Deepwater Port development and to propose recommendations for conflicts prevention or management.
