Ventspils city is situated in the north-west Latvia, near the Baltic Sea. With 44000 inhabitants and area of 55 km2, it is the sixth largest city and also an important port. One of the main tasks for the Ventspils area is to keep balance between environmental and nature protection requirements with the economic and recreational development.



To reach this aim the case study focuses on research and control of changes of coastal zone, as well as on developing qualitative forecasts of changes of seacoast. Later, the observations and the gained knowledge will serve as an input for the development plans.
